Costa del Sol, a paradise found in the province of Malaga in Spain, is known for its golden sand, warm seas, and booming tourist district. The long stretch of beaches is dotted with numerous establishments ranging from cafes, bars, restaurants and nightclubs whilst behind them into the hills lie luxurious villas and apartments that make a holiday in the Costa del Sol a fantastic break from everyday life. However the Costa del Sol is not just about basking in the sun. There are many more attractions that draw tourists to the Costa del Sol. The area is blessed with a rich ecosystem and culture that makes it a perfect holiday destination in Spain.

Here are some facts that you probably never knew about the Mediterranean paradise that is the Costa del Sol…

1. Bird watching

Costa del Sol is a popular destination for birdwatchers. Did you know that there has been more than 350 different species recorded in the vicinity over the past couple of years? Some of these bird species include rare types like Allen’s Gallinule and the Magnificent Frigatebird. Likewise, millions of birds pass and breed within the area providing another attraction to environment-loving individuals and families.

2. Caving

Costa del Sol holidaymakers can also discover the many amazing caves in the area. These include the Nerva Cave, which contains a gigantic column considered by the Guinness Records as the largest in the world with a height of 45 meters, diameter of 20m, and circumference of 64m. Every July, a festival of music and dance is held next to the cave with some international artists coming over to perform. The stalagmite and stalactite formations are also breathtaking. Visitors may go inside the cave during the summer, although it can still be explored in September albeit for just a couple of weeks.

3. Hunting

Another less-known outdoor activity for those who are on a holiday in Costa del Sol is hunting. This activity has been practiced in the area since prehistoric times, even before the arrival of the Romans. This is also a testament to the great biodiversity of the Costa del Sol. Some of the popular species hunted in area are the Spanish Ibex, deer, and wild boar.

4. Hot Air Balloon Rides

Some tourists also like to appreciate the beauty of the Costa del Sol by riding a hot air balloon across the coast. Riders can see the magnificent countryside view of the Costa del Sol from above. This is also an ideal date for lovers on a holiday in the region. And since the Costa del Sol has a good, warm climate, tourists can enjoy a hot air balloon ride virtually all year round. A growing number of groups and enterprises are offering hot air balloon services in the area.

5. Bossaball

Tourists who are tired of the usual beach sports such as beach volleyball and parasailing may want to try a new sport that is making waves in the area. Called Bossaball, this is played by two teams of 3-5 players on a court that is dotted with trampolines and separated by a net.

A sport that originated in Brazil, Bossaball has become a hit in the Costa del Sol. It combines the different elements of sports such as football, volleyball, capoeira and trampolining. Teams have up to 8 touches before crossing it to the other side. Since trampolines are being used, players can jump high and hang in the air, enabling them to strike the ball extremely hard. Plus, the game is played to the beat of Latin American sounds, which makes it all the more entertaining.

6. Awe inspiring views

Here’s one secret for those who want to spend a relaxing holiday on the Costa del Sol. Despite the highly developed coastline across the Costa del Sol region, there is an almost untouched coastline in the area. The Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo area has an area of 1,815 hectares with dramatic steep cliffs and bays in between. Limestone outcrops have developed in awe-inspiring shapes. Different types of trees such as pine trees, Kermes oaks, and wild olives surround the area. Tourists usually flock to the area during the summer months, although camping and fishing are not allowed.

These are just some of the lesser-known attractions in the Costa del Sol. Indeed, the area is blessed with a rich ecosystem and a vibrant mix of urban and countryside lifestyle that should appeal to any type of traveler. These characteristics are the prime reasons why it is a favorite choice of holiday makers across Europe.

If you’re planning a holiday to the Costa del Sol, consider renting an apartment or villa in Marbella
